WOULD YOU WORK FOR FREE?
After I finished studying few years ago, I decided to work in projects for free, without getting paid, to build a nice showreel and get the necessary experience... student projects, low budget, new music bands.... etc.
Now that I have been working more than 5 years, I have the experience, and not only that; I have the necessary equipment to shoot a movie, but people still want me to work for free or for a very very small tip!
I remember a nice example from last month:
I was selected to work in a featured film as the director of photography, nice one! They called me, we spoke, and I agreed with few conditions: I have to know the crew, I have to see the script, I have to see the locations, I have to know every detail of the film, I want a deferred payment of a percentage of the profit and of course, expenses had to be paid.
The reasons for that are simple and easy, If I am going to work in a featured film without getting paid but I have nice opportunities of winning a film festival, I may do it. But in order to win a festival every person of the cast must be good actor, everyone from the crew must know how to do their job, every location has to be nice and... if the story is good and the script is written down properly...... there are opportunities!
They agreed, so I started with the meetings..... Until they told me that "expenses" will only cover the train ticket to the location of the shooting, not the parking for my car. They wanted me to go by train with the camera, the lenses, the tripod, the rigs etc.. (I have to do three trips from my flat to the car in order to load it)... No way! I AM NOT GOING TO DO IT!
Many times I see vacancies in different websites asking for crew like this one:
"We need a director of photography-steadicam operator for a short movie, must have own kit, consisting in Red or Alexa, steadicam (can be a glidecam or similar) and lights. Unfortunately this is an unpaid job but you will have the opportunity to work in a nice project, and we will send the final piece to all major festivals."
What the hell is that? Are you mad? so... I have spent £60,000 to work in your "nice project" for free? who does that? Have you ever seen a similar advert asking for any other kind of professional? a dentist? a bus driver? a plumber? No way!
So, this is my advise to those producers and directors that want a very professional DOP with own kit:
Do you want professionalism? yes? Then be a professional yourself and get funding for your project before you want to shoot a movie. There are many ways of getting them, do your research and call me after. Because I am not going to work for free!
Said this, I would like to share a link, this chart that will help to make a decision:
should I work for free or not?
